Handwashing remains the most effective measure to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading illness, but it’s not a habit that everyone employs. I developed Ready, Set, Soap! as a children’s hand soap that utilizes play and muscle memory to ensure kids grow into healthy adults. Since proper handwashing takes twenty seconds of lathering, the soap comes in the form of single use gems that dissolve in the appropriate time.

I developed Ready, Set, Soap! as a children’s hand soap that utilizes play and muscle memory to
ensure kids grow into healthy adults. Since proper handwashing takes twenty seconds of lathering, the soap comes in the form of single use gems that dissolve in the appropriate time.

Each gem reveals layers of color as seconds pass, and changes hand washing from a chore to a playful game. The soap is packaged in sets of twenty gems, so that by the time a pack is finished, the habit of proper handwashing has been formed!  [ *This project was developed as part of a 2011 collaborative exhibit on design and public health, between Portfolio Center, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and Emory's RSPH. ]

The System

Beyond gamification, the values of teamwork and cooperation are also built into the "Ready, Set..." system. Each product is packaged as a creature that exhibits similar hygienic habits as part of their ecological roles. Example: Ready, Set, Brush! [Toothpaste] is represented by the Goby fish. Gobies have a symbiotic relationship with gators and larger creatures in the wild; when a Goby is able to eat the food caught between their teeth. This provides a meal for the fish, and keeps the teeth of the other animals healthy so that they can continue to hunt without a toothache! This multi-layered approach to learning can creates bathroom routines that are both engaging and fun.
